Paytm, MobiKwik go multilingual as e-wallets tap users in India’s hinterland

New Delhi: Majority of the mobile wallets companies are launching multilingual interfaces as focus shifts to make digital payments and commerce more inclusive and widespread by enabling users to transact in their native languages following demonetisation.

MobiKwik, a mobile wallet company, released five more regional languages version of its application on Thursday.

With this move, the company is expecting to break the language barriers and connect with millions of mobile users from tier-II and tier-III cities by enabling them to transact digitally.

Mobikwik’s user interface is now available in as many as 8 languages such as English, Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu.

“We have further launched regional versions of our app in Bengali, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu to further promote the adoption of digital wallet payments in rural India, “said Upasana Taku, co-founder of Mobikwik, in a statement.

The new language versions will be based on the app’s lighter variant MobiKwik LITE and can be downloaded with standard mobile internet connections by giving just one missed call, the statement added.

MobiKwik powers digital wallet payments for major retailers such as Amul, Big Bazaar, Croma, Pantaloons and others. It also offers payments at pan India toll plazas, IRCTC, major gas companies and petrol pumps across India.

In November 2016, a leading mobile wallet, Paytm had similarly launched 10 regional languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya and Punjabi, on its interface for Android smartphone users.

The company had then claimed to have foreseen 80% growth in its business due to such a move.

On January 3, Paytm received final approval of the Reserve Bank of India to formally launch its payments bank and it expects to start operations by the next month.

Speaking on the importance of regional languages to reach out to the masses to enable them embrace technology, Sunil Kulkarni, deputy managing director, Oxigen Services (India) Pvt. Ltd said,” The Oxigen wallet app is currently available only in English. We are working on the idea and by the end of the next month, the users will be able to transact in other languages as well.”

Oxigen wallet, powered by Oxigen Services Pvt. Ltd is one of the major payment solutions providers in the country and is involved in micropayment of services and remittances in real time.
